Estonia is the 4th biggest wooden house exporter in Europe
Estonia is the 4th largest exporter of wooden houses in Europe and 9th largest player worldwide, as revealed by a recent forest and wood cluster study by the Estonian Investment Agency and Institute of Baltic Study.
The wood, paper and furniture industries together provide more than 20% of the total production of the manufacturing industry in Estonia, whereas the export volume and added value of the cluster has almost doubled within the last decade. Despite the recent economic crisis, the cluster has been able to expand its market share in the world.
The study says that although Estonia has a larger share on the world market in the production of wooden houses than Finland and Sweden, Estonia's competitiveness is still lagging behind the Scandinavian countries. For example, it is under-invested, and value added per employee is much lower. The study suggests that in order for the cluster to be successful, the business strategies of the companies must be updated and the home market broadened to the entire Baltic Sea market with its 100 million residents.
