Nordbiochem - a company working in the field of green chemistry
Nordbiochem OÜ (NBC), founded in 2003, is an Estonian private company working in the field of green (sustainable) chemistry and biotechnology. The company owns a strong technological platform for manufacturing chemicals and materials that come from renewable sources and are priced competitively to fossils based conventional C3 chemicals (i.e. propylens, acrylates etc).
NBC has 10 published patents and technological solutions for superfast fermentation of organics, catalysts production, separation; derivatization of lactate to esters, propylene glycol, acrylates etc.
Company´s latest project was working out the "backward" production of the propylene glycol (PG) ether group of chemicals. The production starts from the renewable sources (starches, molasses etc) and via the patented fermentation technology are converted into lactic acid with very high efficiency (price!). There is another patent covered technology for the formation of propylene glycol from lactate. The propylene glycol ethers are formed afterward by the conventional processes. The propylene glycol is already sold also in foreign markets.
These chemicals (propylene glycol ethers) in general are formed as byproducts during the manufacturing of propylene glycol from propylene oxide. The different kind of PG ethers are used in production of printer inks, paints, etc. and as fuel additives or oxygenate agents.
Company´s mission is to develop and commercialize manufacturing technologies for base chemicals and materials that come from renewable source and are priced competitively to petro-based alternatives.
