The machinery industry manufactures and repairs general machinery (engines, turbines, pumps, valves, stoves etc), special machinery (metallurgy, food processing industry and textile machinery etc), agricultural and forestry machinery. Repair and maintenance services are also offered for ships, boats, aircraft and space vehicles.
There are nearly 300 small and medium-sized producers of machinery and equipment.
The production volumes of the engineering industry have grown rapidly. According to forecasts, both the export and domestic sales of the engineering industry will grow in the long-term perspective.
Larger enterprises are located in Tallinn and Harju County, although the industry is represented in nearly all the regions of Estonia. Most of the enterprises in the sector are small. Larger engineering industry enterprises include on AS Hekotek (timber processing equipment), AS Fors MW, OÜ Palmse Mehaanikakoda (lumber truck trailers, log-lifters), AS Finmec (machinery components) and Metos AS (industrial kitchen equipment), ABB AS (automated equipment, machinery).
The average sales turnover of the sector was 45 million EUR in the first half of 2009.
The average export turnover was 34 million EUR. In 2009, export was divided between the main export countries as follows: Finland (38%), Germany (11%), Italy (9%), Russia (8.5%), Sweden (8.5%) and Norway (4.5%).
