The Estonian metal industry is characterised by rapid development. The average growth of production volumes in the last decade has been nearly 25% a year. Production volumes have grown thanks to export, although the increasing domestic demand has also played a part.
Areas of activity include the production of metals, ironware, metal cisterns, reservoirs and containers as well as the production of weapons and ammunition, cutting implements and tools. Metal is forged, pressed, stamped and rolled and product repair services are provided.
There are nearly 1,000 enterprises operating in this sector. Metal industry is concentrated around Tallinn and the immediate vicinity (over half of the employees) and Ida-Viru County (nearly a fifth of the employees). Larger enterprises include AS Kohimo, AS Viljandi Metall, Cargotec Estonia AS, OÜ BLRT Marketex, AS Remeksi Keskus (metal structures), Ruukki Products AS, AS Saku Metall (building structures), Eesti Energia Tehnoloogiatööstus AS (production and maintenance of products for power plants), AS Hanza Tarkon, AS Favor, OÜ BLRT Masinaehitus, Metalliset Eesti AS (metal treatment), Metaprint AS (production of metal packaging), ArcelorMittal Tallinn OÜ (galvanised steel) and AS Demidov Industries (aluminium compounds).
The average sales turnover of the sector was 134 million EUR in the first half of 2009.
The average export turnover was 77 million EUR. Export was divided between the main export countries as follows: Finland (23.5%), Germany (11%), Sweden (10.5%), Denmark (7%), Norway (6%), Poland (5.5%), Russia (5.5%) and Turkey (4.5%).
